Inspired by the intrinsic beauty of the complexity of the universe, the collaborative exhibition explores the ‘misconceptions’ of what we understand about the universe and the underlying theories and beliefs.

Alongside a collection of individuals’ illustrations and explanations of complex scientific theories we have incorporated sculptural and mixed media work that responds to and explores some findings of key interest with the aim to blend aspects of science and art in cross medium instalments.

Misconception Booklets (£3 Each)

A collection of illustrations explaining interpretations of complex concepts regarding our vast universe.

The Infinite Wormhole (sculpture)

Predicted by the theory of general relativity, a wormhole is a hypothetical/theoretical passage through space-time that could create a shortcut, through a tunnel of the warped fabric of spacetime, to another plane of time.

Also exhibited at 'Triathlon: Run'.

The Special Theory of Relativity (sculpture with projections)

This is a theory that applies to Minkowski space, or "flat spacetime". The theory links space and time to explain the universe using three space dimensions: up/down, left/right, forwards/ backwards and the additional dimension of time. It explains how to interpret motion between different inertial frames of reference. Apparent motion is relative and depends on both the object itself and the movement of the observer.

Stainless steel, black fabric and projection mapping, Approx. 3000mm x 2000mm x 2500mm.

Expansion of the Universe (paintings)

Since the Big Bang, the Universe has been expanding at an accelerating rate. Why? Theorists still don't know the correct explanation but they have given the solution a name: Dark energy. It is an unknown form of energy, hypothesised to extend throughout all of space. The most accepted hypothesis is that the force of “dark energy” is driving the expansion of the universe. Gravity is an attractive force, for the universe to expand, a repulsive force is necessary and it is currently believed that empty space is providing this repulsive force.

Included in these images are the Friedmann equations: a set of equations that, in homogeneous and isotropic models of the universe, determine the expansion of space within the context of general relativity.

(First painting on the left also exhibited in the 'Sculptors Paint Too' exhibition.)
